Key Facts – Stevia

  • Stevia is a sugar substitute made from the leaves of the stevia plant. It’s about 100 to 300 times sweeter than table sugar, but it has no carbohydrates, calories, or artificial ingredients. (WebMD.com)
  • Stevia, unlike other sugar substitutes, is 100% natural.
  • People in Asia and parts of South America have been using stevia as a sweetener for generations
  • Look for stevia in powder or liquid form in supermarkets and health-food stores. You’re likely to find it on the baking goods aisle or in the health food aisle.
  • Only buy FDA regulated stevia products… look for ingredient labels that refer to “stevia extract”, or “Stevia rebaudiana“, and steer clear of ‘whole stevia leaves’ as the FDA has little information on the potential health side-effects. (FDA.gov)
  • They are also rich in fiber and antioxidants.
